Pixel Academy Pty Ltd: Crafting Game Developers in Sydney

We’re reshaping how aspiring game creators learn their craft. Since launching our courses in 2019, we’ve guided hundreds of students through the indie game development landscape—from foundational design concepts to industry-ready projects.

Our Purpose

Why We Do This

Game development doesn’t have to be gatekept by massive studios or expensive programs. We started Pixel Academy Pty Ltd because we’d seen too many talented people abandon their creative ambitions when learning felt disconnected from real projects. Our courses aren’t theoretical—they’re built around actual game development workflows. You’ll work on meaningful projects from week one. You’ll learn from people who’ve shipped games. And you’ll understand not just the “how” but the “why” behind every decision in indie game design.

What We Cover

Pixel Academy Pty Ltd offers specialized training across the core pillars of game development. Each course is hands-on, practical, and designed for Sydney’s thriving indie game community.

Game Engine Fundamentals

Master industry-standard engines through practical projects. We focus on hands-on experience with real game-building scenarios, not just tutorials.

Indie Game Design

Learn design principles that make games compelling. From mechanics to narrative, we’ll show you how successful indie titles engage players without massive budgets.

Programming & Scripting

Write clean, functional code for games. We teach programming concepts within the context of actual game mechanics—not abstract computer science.

Visual Development

Create compelling visuals on a budget. Character design, environment art, UI—we’ll teach you practical techniques used by successful indie teams.

Our Method

How We Teach Game Development

Here’s the thing about learning game development: you can’t just watch videos. You’ve got to build things. That’s why every Pixel Academy Pty Ltd course revolves around creating actual games, not toy projects.

Our instructors aren’t academics—they’re developers who’ve shipped indie games in Australia and internationally. They understand the real challenges you’ll face: scope creep, limited budgets, team dynamics, and pushing through when motivation dips.

We keep cohorts small, usually 12-16 students per session. That means you get real feedback on your work, not generic comments. Plus, you’ll build relationships with classmates who are serious about game development. Some of our past students have gone on to collaborate on projects together.

Our Evolution

Pixel Academy Pty Ltd has grown from a single game design workshop into Sydney’s most comprehensive indie game development training hub.

2019

The Beginning

Started with a single game design fundamentals course, teaching from a shared studio in Alexandria. First cohort was just 8 students who were hungry to learn the craft properly.

2021

Expansion Phase

Added specialized tracks in game engines and visual development. We’d proven the demand was real—grew to over 150 students across multiple cohorts that year.

2023

Dedicated Facilities

Moved to our own space in Marrickville with proper equipment, lab space for group projects, and mentorship studios. This allowed us to expand to more cohorts and introduce advanced specializations.

2026

Today

Running 8-10 cohorts per year with over 400 graduates since launch. We’ve built a genuine community where former students mentor current ones, and several alumni have launched successful indie games.

Our Beliefs

What Guides Our Teaching

Learn by Shipping

You won’t truly understand game development until you’ve finished something. That’s why we push for completion over perfection. Ship early, iterate often.

Real Tools, Real Workflows

We teach with industry-standard software and processes. When you graduate Pixel Academy Pty Ltd, you’re already familiar with tools you’ll use professionally.

Community Over Competition

The indie game scene thrives when developers support each other. We’re building collaborators and friends, not rival contestants.

Practical > Theoretical

You’ll learn design patterns by implementing them, not by memorizing terminology. Understanding comes from doing, not from lectures.

Important Information

Our educational programs are designed to provide valuable knowledge and practical skills in game development. Individual learning outcomes depend on your dedication, prior experience, and how you apply the concepts learned. Pixel Academy Pty Ltd offers training and mentorship to help you develop as a game developer, but success in the industry requires ongoing learning, practice, and personal initiative. Course completion doesn’t guarantee employment or specific career outcomes. We recommend treating our courses as foundational education that you’ll continue building upon throughout your career.
